Capable of multiple grinding operations at a single chucking of the workpiece--saves setup time; assures Astro still maintains its versatility for generating straight or tapered, right or left-hand, infinitely variable leads from a simple built-in lead mechanism.
Turntable mounting of entire workhead slide assembly, adjustable through 235 plus degrees in the horizontal plane, has proven to be a real asset when grinding radii.
Workhead that is adjustable on separate main slide with dual handwheel control has proven to be a boon for Offset slide for workhead spindle permits centerline of spindle to be offset from center of turntable--a necessity when grinding convex or concave radii with centerline outside the axis of workpiece.
Micrometer stop dogs and graduated dials which greatly simplify accurate positioning of workhead main slide, and wheelhead cross and longitudinal slides.
Wheelhead drive is by a 1/2 horsepower continuous duty spindle motor. This, combined with low power loss of high-traction vee belt drive, provides sufficient power for making special cutters, regashing operations, and cutting off shanks by cylindrical grinding.
Coarse and fine feed handwheels are now an integral part of the workhead's offset slide. Coarse increment adjustment is graduation in 0.001" increments with a total movement of 0.050" per turn of the handwheel; fine feed provides 0.0001" increments and 0.010" per revolution. This five to one ratio greatly speeds setups that require the centerline of the workhead to be offset.
Astro now has a three-speed wheelhead which permits more efficient use of different types and sizes of grinding wheels up to its new standard 4" diameter wheels. Three spindle speeds--4000, 5729, and 8000 rpm--provide the speed to match wheel size. A single belt easily repositioned on two three-step cluster pulleys makes changing of speeds a fast, simple operation.

Workhead offset range is increased to 5-1/4" while vertical wheelhead travel is up to 9-1/2". Reduced machine interferences have resulted in increased workhead swivel capability so that a full 180-degree radius can be ground.
More rigid wheelhead spindle. Improved rigidity and greater grinding accuracy are characteristics of the new and larger, hardened and precision ground solid spindle nose. Optimized placement of larger ball bearings to support spindle aids significantly in reducing runout and deflection.
Separate, self-contained, one-shot oil systems supply the proper lubrication to the wheelhead and workhead slide units. And since it is so easy to use, operators are not likely to neglect lubrication of these vital parts. Spindle ball bearings are permanently lubricated.
